LaGrangeville is the largest area of LaGrange town. The town was originally established in 1821 as “Freedom” from parts of the Towns of Beekman and Fishkill, but confusion with another location caused the name to be changed to “LaGrange” in 1828.

Marie Adrienne Françoise de Noailles, the wife of the Marquis de Lafayette, had an ancestral estate in LaGrange and the town was named in her honor at a time when the legendary Lafayette had recently visited the area.
